FBC Whiteville
Sound System, Live Audio Streaming over IP, Video Projection System.
We love to see our customers come back to us when they decide to upgrade their system. It had been about 15 years since Tri-Tronics installed a set of JBL 4652’s and an Allen and Heath GL2200 mixer at First Baptist Church of Whiteville. We were ecstatic to find out that we had been chosen to upgrade the audio system and implement a new video system that could record and broadcast live feeds over the Internet. Technology has come a long way in our field. Products are cheaper, more functional and more reliable, so our customers are realizing that upgrading their system is more accessible than they thought. and when they see what this new equipment is capable of it’s a no-brainer.
The main task at hand seemed pretty straight forward… “Make sure everyone in the sanctuary can hear clearly.” Certain members of the congregation had made a donation and it was our job to make sure the church got the best value for the money spent. The system was designed by Tom Nipper and Aaron Todd and incorporated an Allen & Heath Gl2400 mixing console (below) and a DBX Driverack PA+ to handle the signal processing.
We also installed several PGX wireless microphones and other equipment shown in the pic below.
The newer GL2400 series having better preamps and more functionality with the new 7×4 Matrix “mixer within a mixer” would come in handy for the extra feeds needed for video. Tri-Tronics made the decision to replace the old mains with the new Community Ibox series which provided more even coverage and superior sound quality. “It took hearing those things to convince me that the Ibox’s could hold their own beside a nice set of JBL’s, but these Ibox’s blow the comparable priced JBL’s away… and they are made right here in the USA!” says Mr. Nipper.
The church was equally as pleased with the system. It was the ultimate compliment to see how happy Melvin Ezzell (the church’s representative) was when we finished. It really makes all that hard work and planning worth it. Since then the church has set up the necessary networking with the equipment we provided to stream services online. “It’s amazing to know that while I was on an international business trip, I could watch the service right there on my computer!” Melvin boasts. Below is a picture of the Vaddio equipment Rack used to control the camera system at First Baptist Church Whiteville. This system utilizes two stationary cameras and one robotic camera mounted inside the trim in front of the sound booth.
…Recently the church has been struggling to maintain proper headroom on the Pastors mic. Pastor Hinson uses a very dynamic speech technique, which occasionally leads to distortion when he reaches terminal velocity in his sermon. To solve this issue we proposed using a DBX 160A compressor, one of my favorite compressors of all time. It can be used on any type of input. the great thing about this unit is that I can easy have 10 db of compression on a vocal input without hearing undesirable artifacts. The end result is a much more manageable level as it gently compresses the peaks in the signal.
