Pat Brown from http://www.synaudcon.com/site/, a leading audio educator, led a seminar in Atlanta, GA hosted by Harman International.  We’ve known Pat and Brenda almost as long as Syn-Aud-Con has been around, and they are always a pleasure.  Pat’s no-nonsense, comical approach is why he is considered one of the best.  He talked about everything from proper gain structure, to debunking myths, to stressing proper nomenclature (“loudspeaker” is not to be confused with “speaker”/”talker”), to important tools and calculations that help us do our job.  The Harman folks also showed off gear from AKG, BSS, DBX, Crown, Soundcraft, and JBL.

JBL’s Vertec series Compact and Subcompact line array modules:  For uber high intelligability speach systems, the subcompact is a great choice, but I personally want the compact model which is better suited for more typical sound reinforcement situations; they are a bit more “full” sounding and have higher SPL capabilities.

With wireless technology, we were able to setup a new digital mixer where they could control it on an iPad.  Not only can the sound person sit with the congregation, hear what they are hearing and make adjustments on the spot, but during rehearsals he/she can be on stage to help improve the choir monitor/musician aux mixes.  Having a full set of dynamics processing on every channel has its advantages as well.  Proper use of the fully parametric EQ’s, gating, compression, and limiting can really improve the overall quality of the mix.  One of our biggest goals and challenges is to help churches reduce the visual and audible distractions during service, whether it’s feedback, or the music minister waving at the sound person to turn up the monitors, we want to do everything we can to make sure the equipment is not the source of the distractions, and that your staff has the proper equipment and training to execute flawless delivery of service enhancing audio visual systems.
